Fact Check: These photos of luxury caravans are not from Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra

As Congress leader Rahul Gandhi began the party’s ambitious “Bharat Jodo Yatra” from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, the containers that will serve as accommodations for Gandhi and 230 party workers created some controversy online. Many shared photos of what the interiors of the 60 or so containers mounted on trucks supposedly look like. These photos included what looked like a luxury caravan with high-end interiors.

India TV also used one of the photos shared on social media claiming it was the caravan used by Gandhi during the campaign. The archived version of the post can be seen here and here.

AFWA, however, found that the photos were not of the Bharat Jodo Yatra containers at all.

AFWA probe

With a reverse image search, we found the first three photos in a 2013 Indiatimes report. Per this report, the photos were from the interior of a premium motorhome that was introduced in 2013. The same photos and several others from the interior of this motorhome were also shared by multiple Facebook pages in 2013.

The fourth photo in the post was that of a parked caravan. We found the same published in a 2019 article on the website Luxe Camper. More photos of it were available on the website of Maharashtra-based caravan vendor Motohom.

To get to the bottom of it, AFWA reached out to Congress leader and general secretary in charge of communication for the party, Jairam Ramesh, who confirmed that Gandhi and other party cadres participating in the campaign were using bare minimum utilitarian containers hired from a Mumbai -based company and the images being circulated online were not of their containers.

According to him, Gandhi is using a one-bed container, while other containers have between two and 12 beds. Congress also released a video showing the interiors of the containers used for the campaign.

India Today correspondent Mausami Singh who is covering the Bharat Jodo Yatra and has personally seen the facilities used by the Congress party for the campaign also dismissed the viral claim and confirmed to us that no caravan as seen in the social media posts is part of the campaign .

A video interview done by India Today with Ramesh regarding the controversy can be seen below.

Thus, it is clear that the photos in circulation are old and do not show the interior of the containers used for the Bharat Jodo Yatra.
