In major bummer, Dead & Company show at SPAC cancelled

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Dead & Company have canceled their performance at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center just hours before showtime.

The group, which includes many of the surviving members of the iconic jam band The Grateful Dead as well as younger performers including John Mayer, made the announcement shortly after 3 pm Wednesday, citing “unforeseen circumstances,” without providing further details.

Tickets will be refunded automatically at the original point of purchase, according to the announcement.

The remaining Dead & Company tour dates — including a Friday show in Virginia — are unaffected, according to the band’s announcement. Live Nation, the concert’s promoter, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Saratoga Springs was thronged with fans on Wednesday afternoon, many wearing band attire.

“We’re very disappointed,” said Chris Sotiro, who traveled from Morris County, NJ, for the concert with his wife, Kate.

The couple booked a hotel room and said they’ll try to salvage the night by tailgating and taking a cruise around Saratoga Lake.

The Becker family came from Colorado by way of New York City.

The family caught the band in Hartford, Conn. Tuesday night, but were still disappointed. After they learned the concert was cancelled, they scrambled for alternative options.

All four wore brightly-colored tie-dyed outfits, including 13-year-old Raymond and Eliana, who just turned 12.

“There’s always uncertainty that this is going to be the last tour,” Laren Becker said.

As is usual for Dead-adjacent concerts, the SPAC parking lot had been transformed into “Shakedown Street,” a colorful bazaar featuring souvenir sales and impromptu performances.

Disappointed music fans casting around for something to do — and who are capable of operating a motor vehicle — need not despair: The well-known jam-rock outfit moe. will perform a free concert from 5:30-8:30 tonight on the Empire State Plaza in Albany.
