The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) pledged to take necessary action against a travel agency that allegedly duped hundreds of prospective Haj pilgrims, who were left stranded at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

MOTAC also confirmed that the unnamed travel agency possesses a valid license and is registered with the ministry.

The ministry said its enforcement team had communicated with the travel agency’s representative who informed them that those who were left stranded in the country would be reimbursed in stages and their passports would be returned back to them.

“If there are any victims that were not reimbursed as promised, they should lodge a report at the (KLIA’s) main terminal building police station or any nearest stations,” MOTAC said in a statement issued today.

The victims are encouraged to lodge a formal complaint to MOTAC through its Public Complaints Management System (SISPAA) at motac.spab.gov.my and with the Tribunal for Consumer Claims Malaysia (TPPM) at ttpm.kpdnhep.gov.my to get their money back.

MOTAC also added that the incident will be investigated under Section 8 (1) (d) of the Tourism Industry Act 1992 for conducting business that is detrimental to the interests of the public, the tourism industry or the national economy.

If found guilty, the travel agency faces suspension or revocation of its license.

MOTAC advised the public to make confirmation on the validity of any packages offered by travel agencies to ensure their rights are protected.

Yesterday, it was reported that 380 prospective Haj pilgrims were left stranded at KLIA, believed to have been cheated by a travel agency.

The group were said to have been offered the Furada Haj visa – reportedly issued by the Saudi Arabia government to travel agencies – without going through Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH).
