Olympian Simone Biles named godmother of the Celebrity Beyond: Travel Weekly

Simone Biles is a 19-time World Champion gymnast and seven-time Olympic medalist. Now, she will also be the godmother of a cruise ship.

Biles has been named godmother the Celebrity Beyond and will officially name the ship at its Nov. 4 inaugural ceremony in Fort Lauderdale.

Beyond performing the traditional naming of the Beyond, Biles will also have a presence on Celebrity sailings by offering daily tips broadcast on televisions across the fleet. Biles will also partner with the brand to contribute to its wellness programming for guests.

‘Transformational and courageous’ women as godmothers

Biles’ appointment as godmother comes as the line seeks to name women it finds as “transformational and courageous” who are “breaking barriers and championing change.” In recent years, the line has named Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai and Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code and the Marshall Plan for Moms, as godmothers of the Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex, respectively.

While Biles is considered one of the most accomplished gymnasts of all time, she has also been in the spotlight for other reasons, including her decision to withdraw from the competition at the Tokyo Olympics to focus on her mental wellbeing.

“While I’ve marveled at her abilities and historic accomplishments as a gymnast, it’s Simone’s courage to speak out and her ability to help others be better in sport and in life that has impressed me the most,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, CEO. of Celebrity Cruises. “She has risen to the occasion and overcome challenges time and time again. She is an inspiration.”

Biles was a cruiser as a child. She began sailing with her parents and is “beyond excited to serve as godmother of Celebrity Beyond.”

“I am honored to join such a distinguished group of game-changing women and appreciate the important message this designation holds in recognizing our accomplishments and hopefully inspiring the next generation of women,” Biles said.

The Beyond debuted April 27 in Europe and will summer in the Mediterranean sailing 10-night itineraries. The ship will sail to Fort Lauderdale in November for the official naming and sail five- to nine-day sailings in the Caribbean.
