The fields were closed at Greenwich’s Western Middle School years ago. Consultants hope work can begin soon.

GREENWICH – Consultants have poked and prodded Western Middle School’s sports fields for six years, delivering diagnostics to officials at the federal Environmental Protection Agency and state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

And now the construction is approaching for remediation of the contaminated site, said Ryan Wohlstrom, a senior project engineer at Langan, stirring skeptical responses from members of the Board of Education during last week’s meeting.

Wohlstrom estimated optimistically that crews could start clearing the top 2 feet of contaminated soil at the end of the year – or next year. As he suggested the lack of action continuing to 2023, board member Karen Hirsh shook her head slightly.
